Magua Returns

A Chief Regains Influence
A force assembled
Magua returns with Cora and places himself at the head of Huron warriors. His personal vendetta becomes bound to the community’s armed resistance.
A precarious position
The Hurons conceal themselves between the Delaware force and their village. Their apparent strength depends on surprise and defensible ground.
The Defense Breaks

Encirclement and Retreat
Pressure from two sides
Hawkeye’s force advances while Uncas’s attack reaches the enemy’s flank. A further assault from Chingachgook’s position makes the Huron defense untenable.
Flight toward the village
The warriors abandon exposed positions and retreat through the forest. Their withdrawal carries the fighting into the place they had meant to defend.
Destruction and Dispersal

A Community Destroyed
The aftermath
The battle leaves the Huron settlement ruined and its survivors scattered. The Delawares return from combat to collective mourning rather than celebration.
A larger consequence
The destruction settles an immediate feud but cannot undo the losses that produced it. The aftermath exposes the violence through which frontier power is repeatedly contested.
